it's a sturdy hardwood extendable table with no major scratches. may or may not paint it, we'll see if it's going to fit in the unit comfortably first. it's not very large when it's small and it would be handy to be able to fit more when the occasion calls for it.

curbside table
my friend andi and i spied this table by the side of the road yesterday. it was a bit of a struggle to get it home so hopefully it works out.

whitewashed wood
anything that makes a small space look fresher, bigger and more inviting is fine by me and while i love wooden floorboards, dark wood floors aren't exactly what springs to mind.
but what about whitewashed wooden floorboards? it would help create a "blank canvas" while preserving the natural imperfections of the wood, any colours or interesting objects placed in the room would pop.

according to apartment therapy, "whitewashing allows a bit of the wood grain and color to show through the finish. the result is a soft, hazy white layer that's a little bit rustic, but still spiffs up an old floor quite nicely, unifying the entire surface in whiteness."
there's a DIY Guide over at DIY network. i wonder what kind of wood the flooring is?

economic vs environmental
hold your fire, but i'm not particularly concerned about environmental practices in the home. i have no care for sustainable this and sustainable that, water saving shower heads are definitely not preferred and i'll use as many damn paper towels as i want.
what i do care about is my money and how i spend it. apparently leaving appliances on standby uses a fair bit of power; especially televisions, game consoles, stereos and the like. clamouring behind tv cabinets a few times a day to save a few dollars a month on a power bill might not seem that appealing but could be worthwhile.

worthwhile enough to spend $70 on a power board? plug in your highest power sucking appliances and individually turn them on or off at the wall by remote control. i guess over the course of it's life the savings would let it pay for itself (and them some) and if it's doing good for the environment that's fine by me.

brown beginnings
armed with only a photo of what may, or may not, be our new unit; A and I have been dreaming up all sorts of things. admittedly, while my head is full of paint swatches and the ikea catalog, i'm fairly certain all he's thinking about is big screen TVs and the home cooking potentials.

p.s. i hope the brown armchairs come with it? ; D
